The number of online professionals and freelancers in the country is increasing with time. Bangladesh Bank and other concerned government agencies are aware of this. As proof of this, freelancers and online professionals in the country are going to get 4% incentive for using 55 online marketplaces or platforms.
In other words, the government of Bangladesh will provide 4% bonus or incentive or export subsidy if the money earned from any of the listed online marketplaces or platforms enters the country.
Bangladesh Bank has given the above information in a circular recently recognized by the Department of Information Technology. It lists the online marketplaces that will be encouraged to use according to the circular. Online professionals will receive a 4% incentive based on the money earned by working in the software and ITS sectors in these marketplaces.
Earlier, in a circular dated September 20, 2021, Bangladesh Bank had conditioned Marketplace to be recognized by the Department of Information Technology for receiving cash incentives for exporting services for individual level freelancers as opposed to exporting software and ITES services.
Later, in another circular dated January 18, 2022, detailed instructions were given on how the revenue of software and ITES services exported through recognized marketplaces would be cash incentive.
The circular, citing another circular issued in September last year, said that the export subsidy applicable to freelancers was effective. Another circular issued in January this year also stated how cash incentives would be provided from the money earned through software and ITS from the listed marketplaces.
The government is going to give 4% cash incentive to the freelancers for the money earned by providing any kind of exporting service. The initiative was launched in September last year to encourage online workers and youth towards online income and freelancing.
This cash incentive provided by the central bank government has made the matter much easier. A freelancer will receive a cash incentive after verifying their claimed earnings with the appropriate documents.
To facilitate the understanding of freelancers, Bangladesh Bank has stated what is meant by exporting products. Exporting products include software and information technology-enabled services (ITS). Digital Content Development & Management, 2D & 3D Animation, Geographic Information Services, IT Support & Software Maintenance Services, Website Services, Business Process Outsourcing, Call Center, Data Entry, Data Processing, Search Engine Optimization Services such as Commerce, International Affiliate Marketing, Digital Data Analytics, Cyber Security, etc. will be considered as exporting products.
At present, about িয়ন 300 million in ICT services comes to Bangladesh from abroad through Bangladesh Bank. This initiative of the Government of Bangladesh will further encourage freelancers as well as inspire many to build a freelancing career.
